TEACHER
Mrs Alanna Riley Cornes is a 24-year veteran of Texas and Louisiana schools. She is a 1993 graduate of Kirbyville High School, and a 1997 graduate of Texas A&M University, a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in English and history, with minors in Spanish, linguistics, anthropology, and U.S/Latin American Relations. She has a master’s degree in Secondary Education Curriculum and Instruction from Stephen F. Austin State University, a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Lamar University, a double master’s degree in English and linguistics from Northwestern State University, and is currently in the dissertation portion of her EdD in Educational Leadership at Lamar University, as well as in the Educational Diagnostician program. She also earned postgraduate certificates in school superintendency from the University of Texas, specializing in school law and special populations; the principalship from Lamar University, specializing in teacher retention and special populations, and an international
TESOL teaching certificate from NSULA.
Mrs Cornes is also an English faculty member at McNeese State University, Stephen F Austin State University, Lamar University, Northern Iowa State University, and Angelina College. She is also an education instructor at Lamar, and is a certified online instructor. She was named as one of the top 40 secondary educators in Texas in both 2017 and 2018, and won a national award for secondary teaching excellence in 2012. In 2008, Mrs Cornes was Merryville Junior High’s Teacher of the Year.

I am also an online instructor for Lamar University, McNeese State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, and Angelina College in the English department; I also teach education at the college level.
I have taught English, social studies, Spanish, journalism, gifted and talented, AP, PreAP, ESL, SPED, and dual credit courses since 1997 in both Texas and Louisiana. I have also coached UIL speaking and writing events in Texas at the State level, and served as UIL academic coordinator, yearbook advisor, newspaper advisor, journalism director, department chair. I have been a distance learning coordinator, an ESL coordinator, and a Title III coordinator, as well as a Texas Virtual Schools Network coordinator and teacher mentor.
I am married to Scott Cornes, and we have three children: twins, Ella and Jackson, who attend MHS, and our oldest son, Riley. Riley passed away at the age of 18 on September 16, 2019. We have one dog, an English Springer Spaniel, Coco, who was Riley’s service dog.
I love spending time with my family, reading, cooking, shopping, writing, and traveling. I also love “Star Wars”!
